Martí Noticias reports that the health of political prisoner Nelson Vázquez Lima, president of Jóvenes por la Democracia Movement, and in prison since 1991, has deteriorated gravely due to a month long hunger strike. Other contributing factors to the state of his health have been the several beatings administered by the prison guards.

Vázquez Lima started his hunger strike on April 5th demanding, among other things, to be able to receive family visits, religious assistant, and to stop the abuses committed against him and other prisoners by the penal authorities.
